Vibo Marina is a fairly big town and tourist center situated on the north-western slopes of Monte Poro, with one of the best and most secure ports on the coast between Salerno and Reggio Calabria.
In the port area you can experience the picturesque fishing boats coming back after having lain their nets for the day, or the fish market (banchina Tripoli), and admire the wooden boats that have been built with the traditional axe technique.
History In the III century B.C. in the place where now is placed Vibo Marina there was a Roman harbour made on demand by Agathocles the tyrant of Syracuse. The installation of the harbour goes from the caste of Bivona to the high part of Vibo Marina, where a Roman manor was founded in the XX A.D. century. Vibo Marina was originally called Porto Santa Venere (Santa Venere Harbour). A legend tells that the local fishermen discovered on the sandy shore a statue of Santa Venere. In the 1928 A.D. the name was changed in Vibo Marina.
Worth a visit: Castello di Bivona built in 1442 to protect the port of Bivona from pirates, has been used mostly for military but also economical purposes and is now in a state of neglection, waiting for a thourough renovation. It is surrounded by an interesting archeological area with findings from the greek, roman and medieval eras.
